Skills Assessment for Australian Visas: Simplifying the Process for a Successful Outcome

A positive skills assessment is a mandatory requirement for skilled migration under Australia's general skilled migration and employer-sponsored visa programs. Skills assessments involve evaluating an applicant's qualifications and/or employment against the suitability of a nominated occupation.

Below is a list of some of the visas that require applicants to provide a positive skills assessment:

  • Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) visa (subclass 186)
  • Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) visa (subclass 187)
  • Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) – Points-tested stream
  • Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 489)
  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491)
  • Skilled Employer-Sponsored Regional (provisional) visa (subclass 494)
  • Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)
  • Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa (subclass 482)

Different assessing bodies evaluate the suitability of various occupations. For instance, if an applicant wishes to obtain a skills assessment for an Accounting degree, CPA, CA, or IPA can provide the assessment. Some occupations require work experience upon completion of the degree or qualification, while others may not.

Applicants are responsible for obtaining the required skills assessment, and each assessing body has its own processes, procedures, criteria, timeframes, and charges.
